The Gratuitous Promise

The Gratuitous Promise: not worth anything, but I'm making it anyway!.........My thoughts as a stay-at-home mom turned law student, who just passed the California bar exam.

A Room with a View

My boyfriend and I went to SF this past weekend. Here's the view from our room. Pretty cool, huh? If you look closely, you can see the rainbow to the left of Coit Tower.

While in the city, we visited the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor Museum. Both are fabulous! In addition, we had an incredible dinner at One Market Restaurant. I can easily recommend all three places. What a great, short escape from Fresno!

Helicopter Pix

Here's some of the pictures I took while flying over Maui, Molokai and Lanai in a helicopter yesterday. Was a lot of fun!

Greetings from Maui

I've been collecting sunset photos over the last 5 days here in Maui. These are some of my favorites.

Tomorrow my son and I are taking a helicopter tour of west Maui and Molokai. Sunday we are flying out, but getting into SFO late, so I won't be back in town until Monday afternoon.

It's nice to be away, but I'm looking forward to being home-in my own bed, and living a normal life (assuming I can figure out what that is, of course).

Nine Weeks

The bar exam is 9 weeks away. I've done over 500 MBE questions this past week as a warm up, but it gets serious tomorrow when my bar review classes begin.

Because I anticipated having little in my life other than studying and sleeping the next 2 months, I spent a couple days at the coast this weekend. It was soooo nice! This picture is a poor representation, as the colors were so much more vibrant in person. I don't know if I've ever seen water so emerald green before! Incredibly gorgeous!

In other news, my daughter is coming home from MIT this morning. She is only going to be here for 12 days since she has a job back in Cambridge this summer, but I'm looking forward to seeing her. It's hard to believe she is half way through her years at MIT. I suppose that isn't necessarily true. Perhaps she will end up going back for graduate work some day. That would not surprise me.

I should get a little studying in before she arrives, as I doubt I'll get anything done for the rest of the day once she is here. Ok, off to do a few MBEs...

Greetings from Half Moon Bay

Well, not exactly. I'm home now, unfortunately. Had a wonderful weekend though. We had a beautiful one bedroom suite, complete with fireplace and ocean view. This is the view from our room. Believe me, I did not want to leave. I have to give a big recommendation for the Ritz Carlton. The resort and its spa are fabulous! It is such a treat to have a place this nice only 3 hours away. World class shopping and dining is nearby as well, so makes for a perfect getaway. We have been there several times in the past, but haven't been for a couple years. I will make the next trip much sooner!

It makes me realize how much I miss being a normal person- one that has free time every weekend and can read, sleep, travel or do WHATEVER instead of all the mundane reading, writing and studying that comprises the life of a law school student. I'm so ready to be done with this. I'm tired and want to be normal again, and feel like time is actually my own.

Mmmmm, Fair Food!

Yesterday we went to the Fair. Having grown up here, it's just something you have to do. They have really improved the fairgrounds a lot over the last decade, and continue to add new exhibits. Of course, it is the traditional things that we go back for, year after year.....cinnamon rolls, soft tacos, corn dogs. Hubby and son got adventurous and tried some of the fried food (twinkie and oreos), but those just didn't seem appealing to me.

The weather was perfect yesterday too! It seems like it is normally 90+ during the fair every year so it would delightful to have to about 70. Additionally, it didn't seem to be as crowded as it usually is. My only real complaint was that they didn't have enough officers doing the wanding of the crowds at the entrance. There were TWO officers when we arrived shortly after the 10:30am opening. It created quite a backup and I do not understand why they didn't have at least 5 working. And I also found it curious that some of the apparent security patrol on the inside of the fair looked like the type of hoodlums I would usually avoid getting anywhere near. Whatever. I get out of there long before dark and any shenanigans begin.

Since I had already spent most of the day at the fair, I decided to make it a totally school-free day and then watched the remainder of the Bulldog game once we got home, and later made enchiladas and margaritas. Pretty much a very pleasant day.

This afternoon I need to work on Community Property. We have a midterm in about a week and a half. I did spend a few hours going through and organizing all my notes on Friday, but I need to get more prepared for the actual exam.

Tomorrow, I have the day off since the feds get Columbus day off. Yeah! I'm planning on spending the entire day working on my paper for AR&W. Normally I would have had to do that this weekend, but the day off let me enjoy the fair yesterday instead.

Oh, and before I forget, I finally have a trip planned in my future! I was so disappointed not to be able to go anywhere this summer, and I'm so used to traveling. It's nothing big, but I'm happy. Our anniversary is in November, and because it falls on a Monday and in a week that I have a paper due, we're going a couple weeks earlier. We're going to one of my favorites, the Ritz Carlton over in Half Moon Bay. It has incredible views, a wonderful spa, and it has been way too long since I've been there. Always nice to have a trip to look forward to.

Speaking of trips, we still haven't figured out what we're doing next summer. We had thought about going back to Italy and seeing more there, but we're also considering going on a cruise in northern Europe (possibly seeing my relatives in Sweden), or going to Tahiti. How's that for options? At this point it all sounds good, and I'm not sure which I'd rather pick.

I'm hungry....time for breakfast!

I'm Back!

Home from Vegas, and tired. But had a great time! :) The Wynn is fabulous! Loved it! Had an awesome view from our very luxurious room and wonderful service too. I would definitely stay there again.

Traveling is just part of my life- I couldn't imagine NOT traveling. It didn't seem to hurt me any last year. I went to Maui for 5 days over Thanksgiving right before midterms, and then on Easter break, I went to Boston and then Disneyland, each 3 days, right before finals. Oh, and I did Vegas in February before a couple spring midterms. LOL

I did bring my Bus. Org. outline with me, but only read it once the whole weekend, so I will get serious on that tomorrow. Friday is going to come way too soon!

Something to be excited about

I'm started to get excited about our trip to Las Vegas on Friday. It's really nothing big (been there lots of times, and it's only for the weekend), but I have felt so down about stuff that it is nice to have something fun to look forward to. I'm working hard to get all my reading and stuff for next week done before Friday so that I won't have to take any work with me. (Of course, ugh, I will take my Bus. Org. outline with me to study, as that midterm unfortunately is a week from Friday.)

The temperature in Vegas should be about the same as here (high 60s)- so much nicer than 115 in the summer there! (Yes, I've done that before!) We're staying at the Wynn, one of the newer hotels on the strip, which has some fabulous shops, including Chanel and Cartier. One of the fun things I love to do in Vegas so look and shop in those kind of stores, because they will never be in Fresno! Wynn also has that wonderful teppanyaki restaurant, Okada, which we have reservations for on Friday. Yum! Can't wait!

Ok, so I just wrote my 250 word comment on a fellow Con Law student's practice test. I've already done my reading for next week's Property, Con Law and Crim classes. No more reading for Bus. Org. and I've long since given up reading for Tax. I guess I need to spend some time working the outlines and I'll be good to go.

Sigh

Nothing much new. I worked on some outlines this weekend, but that's about it. I seriously lack motivation to do anything.

I talked to my daughter yesterday. She was excited because the Mythbusters were on campus and she was in the 4th row during their talk there. She's doing well, best in her Calculus class, which not surprisingly, is her favorite class. She has made friends and knows her way around Cambridge. It's just weird. She has this real life that I am not a part of. I mean, I can talk to her, but it's just not the same. I'm looking forward to seeing her in a few weeks, but at the same time I expect it to be painfully hard because when she is here, she won't truly be home anymore.

We are going to Las Vegas next weekend as an early anniversary trip (as my Business Organizations professor scheduled our midterm on the weekend of our actual anniversary), so I do have that to look forward to. Maybe getting out of town will give me a needed break and a change of attitude. I certainly need one.
